The procedure isn’t completely painless. Although a fine needle is used for lip injections, the pricks can be felt to some extent. A numbing gel is applied to the lips before the procedure, and once it has taken full effect, it provides very effective relief. If the filler gel also contains lidocaine – a pain-relieving ingredient – any discomfort is reduced even further.

Of course, everyone’s pain threshold is different. Some clients are so accustomed to the treatment that they choose to skip the numbing gel altogether.

Lip fillers should be avoided only if there is an active cold sore on the lips. At other times, the procedure is perfectly safe.

Note: If you are prone to cold sores, take antiviral medication a few days before the procedure as a preventive measure. Without it, the lips may become irritated from the injections, and a new flare-up is almost certain to appear the following day.

In one session, filler is administered one syringe (1 ml) at a time — such a small amount makes it impossible to overdo. To create an unnatural “duck lip” look, it would take at least 3–4 ml of filler.

The worst that might happen is that once the swelling goes down, you may feel the result is a little too subtle and want to add a touch more.

If necessary, filler can also be safely dissolved, so even if too much is injected, it can easily be corrected.

Lips are elastic and naturally return to their original shape once the filler has broken down. Because this happens gradually, there’s no risk of your lips suddenly appearing “deflated” or wrinkled.

When the effect fades, your lips simply return to how they looked before the injections.

If you’d like to maintain the result, occasional top-up treatments are recommended. The frequency is individual and can be determined together with your specialist.
