How does laser tattoo removal work?

A tattoo is created by injecting colour pigment into the dermis layer of the skin. Because the pigment particles are too large, the body cannot remove them naturally.

Laser tattoo removal works by directing a beam of light into the skin, where heat breaks the pigment into microscopic fragments. Once the pigment has been broken down, the body naturally removes it through the lymphatic system.

The result is smooth, scar-free, healthy and clean skin.

Remove tattoos of any colour

Pigments of different colours lie at different depths in the skin, which means the laser that breaks them down must work at various wavelengths.

Unlike many other lasers, the Alma Lasers Harmony XL system can do exactly that. Thanks to its versatile settings, it enables the safe and effective removal of tattoos of any colour, without damaging the surrounding skin.

How to prepare?

Laser tattoo removal is not as painful as tattooing, but preparation is somewhat similar.

  • Come to the session well-rested and after a proper meal – feeling good is important.
  • The skin to be treated must be completely healthy and clean (without make-up or creams).
  • Avoid sunbathing and self-tanning products for two weeks before the session.

Fast and effective tattoo removal

Laser tattoo removal takes a short amount of time. During each session, the laser is applied to the skin only once. The total duration depends on the size of the tattoo – the larger the image, the longer it takes. However, no session lasts longer than 40 minutes, as treating a very large area at once could make recovery difficult.

Tattooing is quite painful and is usually performed without anaesthesia. Removal is not entirely painless either, but to minimise discomfort, numbing cream can be used before the procedure. During the session, you may feel heat and a tingling sensation. The number of sessions required will be determined by the specialist.

After the procedure

  • Cool the irritated skin with ice.
  • Use a healing cream or ointment to speed up recovery.
  • Cover the treated area with a plaster or bandage.
  • Avoid tight or abrasive clothing.
  • Do not visit saunas, pools or spas for two weeks.
  • Avoid direct sunlight for four weeks.
  • If blisters appear, do not pop them – allow them to heal naturally.
  • Drink plenty of water to support your lymphatic system and recovery.

How quickly will results appear?

If the tattoo is not very deep, noticeable fading may be visible immediately after the first session. The ink begins to disperse and the skin appears clearer. However, in most cases, the body needs more time to remove the pigment completely.

For black tattoos, treatment usually consists of about 3–6 sessions, but this is highly individual – every tattoo, skin type and body reacts differently.

During your consultation, our specialist will provide an initial estimate, but the final number of sessions will depend on your progress.

There must be at least four weeks between sessions to allow the skin to heal fully.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, it is. Laser technology has advanced significantly over the years, and results are excellent. Both black and coloured tattoos can be fully removed, although the number of sessions required varies.

Complete removal is only possible with a powerful and modern laser. At Decus Clinic, we use one of the world’s best systems. If outdated or weak lasers are used, the result may be only partial pigment removal and skin damage that cannot be reversed.

This is highly individual, as each tattoo is different. Some tattoo artists place the pigment deeper or more densely into the skin, while others work more superficially. This affects how quickly the laser can break down the pigment particles.

Your skin and body characteristics also play a role. Fortunately, our specialist can provide an initial estimate during consultation. The final number of sessions becomes clear as treatment progresses.

You may reach your desired result faster than expected – noticeable improvement is usually visible already after the first procedure, and with each session the tattoo continues to fade.

It depends directly on the size of the tattoo. During one session, the laser is applied to each area only once. Small tattoos take around 5–15 minutes, while larger ones take longer. Additional time may be needed for the numbing cream to take effect.

The price depends on the number of sessions needed.

Number of sessions Size of the tattoo Price
One Up to 3cm2 59€
One Up to 5cm2 79€
One Up to 10cm2 135€
One Up to 20cm2 210€

While cheaper services can be found elsewhere, they often involve outdated or weak equipment, which can damage the skin.

Low-quality lasers are less effective, meaning more sessions are required, and they can cause burns or scarring that may never heal properly. When choosing a clinic, always consider the safety and quality of the equipment – your skin deserves the best care.

Although modern laser systems are powerful and reliable, problems can still occur if the procedure is performed by an unqualified provider using the wrong equipment.

Always ensure your tattoo is removed at a trusted clinic by trained specialists. Using the laser incorrectly – for example, treating the same area multiple times in one session – can lead to scarring. A proper course of several sessions is essential for safe and lasting results.

Because different ink colours require different wavelengths, the laser must be versatile and powerful. Otherwise, the desired result cannot be achieved, and your skin may be damaged in the process.

Unfortunately tattoo removal is not completely painless. Some describe the sensation as similar to tattooing itself. The good news is that laser removal takes much less time.

Tattoo artists generally avoid numbing the skin, as it can affect how well the skin absorbs the ink. Fortunately, laser tattoo removal allows the use of anaesthetic if needed. Depending on the sensitivity of the area, the discomfort caused by the procedure may still be tolerable even without numbing.

No. The Harmony XL laser used at Decus is of the highest quality and removes pigment without damaging healthy skin. Our experienced specialists know exactly how to avoid the risks associated with improper technique. As a result, you can expect smooth, even skin with no scarring.

Yes, the laser technology used at Decus Clinic is safe and effective for all skin types.

As the broken-down pigment is removed through the lymphatic system, improving lymphatic circulation can help. Exercise, yoga, breathing exercises, lymphatic massage (including LPG), sauna sessions after the healing period, a clean diet and drinking plenty of water all support the process. However, the main effect still comes from the laser.

The skin has the most difficulty absorbing red ink tones, which often causes problems for tattoo artists. However, once red tones have been absorbed, they are also among the hardest to remove. Red, orange, purple, and pink pigments are located in the most superficial layer of the skin. To remove them, a laser operating at a specific wavelength is required. The laser used at Decus Clinic is capable of covering this wavelength as well.

Laser removal is the safest, most effective, and skin-friendly method available today. Other methods are no longer used, as only laser treatment ensures smooth, clear, and healthy-looking skin.
